Evaluate the Financial Performance of a Business - Assignment Example Balance sheet Income statement and Cash flow statement. These are the basic statements normally prepared by profit-oriented corporations. These statements help in knowing the profitability and financial soundness of the business concern. These are prepared at the end of a given period of time. Financial statements are used as an important tool to communicate the financial information to parties outside the organization (such as investors, creditors, and other external decisions makers). The Balance Sheet; The purpose of preparing balance sheet is to report the financial position (amount of assets, liabilities, and shareholdersââ¬â¢ equity) of a firm during a particular period of time. A balance sheet contains complete information about assets, liabilities, and shareholdersââ¬â¢ equity of the company. Assets; Assets are things which have economic value and that which are owned by the company. It include tangible asset, such as plants, trucks, equipment, and inventory. It also in cludes intangible asset, such as trademarks and patents. Cash itself is an asset. Tangible asset can be divided into two, Current asset and fixed asset. Current asset represent the companyââ¬â¢s liquidity. This is where companies list all of the stuff which can be converted into cash in a short period of time, usually a year or less (Kennon 2012). Fixed asset is an asset held with the intention of being used for the purpose of producing or providing goods or services, and it is not meant for sale in the normal course of business (Accounting for Fixed Assets n.d). Liabilities: Liabilities include all kind of obligation that a company have. The term liabilities mean the amount of money that a company owes to others. Shareholdersââ¬â¢ equity; It is also called capital or net worth. The following formula summarizes what a balance sheet shows: ASSETS = LIABILITIES + SHAREHOLDERS'EQUITY Income Statements; Income statement is a statement which shows the revenue that earned by the com pany during a specific period of time (usually for a year or some portion of a year Income statement also shows the expenses, and the cost associated with the earning of revenue. Income statement also gives information regarding how much the company earned or lost over a period of time. This statement helps to calculate earnings per share (EPS), and it also tells how much money shareholders would get, if the company decides to distribute the whole earnings of the company. Income statement can be also called the statement of operation, or statement of earnings. Statements of Cash Flow; A cash flow statement is a statement that contains a detailed report regarding the companyââ¬â¢s inflows and outflows of cash. Cash flow statement is helpful in knowing the net increase or decrease in cash for the period. It is prepared by using the information and reports in the companyââ¬â¢s balance sheet and income statement. Cash flow statement is helpful in recognizing the, changes in cash b alance(increase or decrease) sources of cash uses of cash There are three parts included in the cash flow statement. What is more interesting and beneficial effect of this development is the realization of people to further build up their capabilities and potentials to be better at what they do whether personally and professionally. Moreover, in order to thrive in this present social condition, one must possess the necessary skills in order to succeed. This trend is obviously manifested in the corporate world wherein sets of criteria are established to ensure that businesses profit and at the same time provide the high-quality products and services to customers. Due to the lucrative benefits and opportunities that the field of business offers, many are enticed to become a part of it making this field highly competitive. In order to excel at oneââ¬â¢s chosen career in the corporate world, an individual must possessed fundamental skills that will help him/her to be successful. There are three things to consider when aspiring in being brilliant and outstanding in the global society. First, one must be motivated. Motivation is a vital factor in the accomplishment of oneââ¬â¢s goals and objectives. Without this, the materialization phase of the plan will not take place. Based on my personal experiences, being motivated was the key in finishing my studies in high school. During that my phase of my life, I was faced with many temptations to stray away from my dreams. But since I was determined to be a ââ¬Å"somebodyâ⬠in the upcoming future, I productively finished my secondary education which also facilitated my success while I was in college. The second essential skill for success is the ability to easily adapt and be flexible. These two skills are interconnected because to be able to adapt to a new environment or condition, an individual must first have the capacity to be flexible which is exhibited by being open-minded and resilient. In every endeavor that people get into, they must always try to be flexible at all times so that the tasks at hand can be done without any setbacks which can minimize the time and effort put into the project or research. By doing this, the chance of forging healthy relationships with other people would be most likely which is needed in guaranteeing a spot in the corporate ladder. Furthermore, the third and last must-have skill would be critical thinking. This particular skill is essential in making significant decisions that can aid in progressing oneââ¬â¢s career in the professional world and elevating oneââ¬â¢s status in the society. If an individual possess this skill, he/she will definitely go along way in the corporate world because there is a saying ââ¬Å"think first before you act. â⬠Overall, the three mentioned skills will not be able to contribute to the success of an individual on their own. They must be combined together in order to get the best results. Motivation, flexibility and critical thinking are skills that complement one another. If one is missing, the likelihood of performing well in a global setting would be greatly reduced. So individuals should pursue trainings and education that will help them develop these skills. As mentioned, the real world is very aggressive so in order to get ahead of the pack, one should always strive to be the best in their respective fields. Comparing Katharina, of The Taming of the Shrew and Beatrice of Much Ad
Comparing Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Katharina, of The Taming of the Shrew and Beatrice, of Much Ado About Nothing Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Katharina, of The Taming of the Shrew and Beatrice, of Much Ado About Nothing, are very similar characters.à Each is plagued with unrequited love, and depressed by their inability to woo the suitor of their choosing.à Neither will accept the passive female role expected by society. Yet, both women seem to accept their role as wife by the conclusion.à Upon further examination, one will find that Beatrice is a much more complex character.à One would have to agree with the critic who said, "Katharina is a character sketched in bold, rapid stokes, with none of Beatrice's sophistication, verbal brilliance, or emotional depth."à In Taming of the Shrew, the first introduction to Katharina, by Gremio and Hortensio, tells that she is a shrew, (1.I .54-60) and that she will never find a groom.à When she first speaks we see her responding to these insults, but she was provoked so her words seem appropriate.à Yet as the play continues we see Katharina tying up Bianca, (2.I.29) and hitting her.à This can be rejected as sibling rivalry, but later Katharina slaps Petruchio when he is trying to woo her (2.I.214). Katharina seems to have a physically violent side that isn't present in Beatrice.à She also does not seem to have as strong as a character as Beatrice, especially when one considers that Petruchio was able to tame her in a very short time. In the opening scene of Much Ado About Nothing,à Beatrice says some harsh things about Benedick (1.I.37-43).à She seems to be unprovoked but very rigid in her opinion of him.à In Leonato's house, the discussion of Beatrice and marriage leads her uncle to conclude that, "Thou... ...y is important.à But the most important thing to note is that the weaker of the two did change her attitudes, beliefs and actions in order to become a better wife for her husband.à Both women seem to be happy as do the men and like most conclusions of Shakespeare's plays, all the loose ends are tied up. Edgar Allen Poe Essay
Edgar Allen Poe was a poet and writer who lived a dreadful and terrible life, which helped him create remarkable and horrifying stories in the 19th century. While growing up Edgar Allen Poe lived a horrible life watching his mom, stepmom and wife die because of tuberculosis. Through all the pain given to Edgar Allen Poe through those tragic events he was able to construct stories and poems of death, love, horror, and religion. By examining Edgar Allen Poe story ââ¬Å"The Black Catâ⬠you will be able to understand his creation of a miserable and painful world from his usage of symbolism, imagery, and plot. In the story ââ¬Å"The Black Catâ⬠Edgar Allen Poe utilizes symbolism many times in the story. The black cat is the main symbol in the story because it represents that the cat is evil. First of all the cat is named Pluto, which means god of the underworld. Secondly, some people are superstitious and believe a black cat is bad luck and can give you trouble just as it did for the narrator. Edgar Allen Poe employs symbolism in order to force the reader to see his views on life, religion, love, and death. In the story ââ¬Å"The Black Catâ⬠Edgar Allen Poe utilizes imagery many times in the story. At one point in the story there are talking about an axe and a cellar. We can imagine that in a story like ââ¬Å"The Black Cat,â⬠going to the cellar is a bad idea. We can almost smell the stuffy cellar smell floating up at us. The imagery is vague and murky, until we get to the axe. We all know an axe is deadly and dangerous and can probably picture an image of him when he holding it ready to kill someone. Edgar Allen Poe makes use of imagery to improve the setting, to improve the mood, and to improve suspense. The whole story ââ¬Å"The Black Catâ⬠is about a guy thatââ¬â¢s sentenced to death so he tells his story on why he is sentenced to death. The narrator is a drunken person who has a cat named Pluto who he starts to dislike and then cuts it eye out, and then hangs him on a tree. Soon when he wakes up and his house goes on fire and him, wife and his servant escape. Soon another cat comes with a missing eye and he follows the narrator around. Next, they get a new house and they go up to the cellar and he found an axe. Then, the narrator tries to kill the cat, but he accidently he kills his wife. After that, he stuffs the body and the cat in the wall. Finally, the murder is discovered and the man seems convinced that the cat exposed him on purpose by letting him be stuffed up and then making noises so the police could hear it and arrest the narrator. Furthermore, he has created a dramatic, intense, and a horrifying plot in the story. In conclusion, from examining Edgar Allen Poe story ââ¬Å"The Black Catâ⬠you were able to understand his creation of a miserable and painful world from his usage of symbolism, imagery, and plot.

Scientifc Method Lab 1
3/22/2013 Lab 1- The scientific method In this lab I am learning about the steps of the scientific method and how it can be applied to daily life. In my first exercise I analyzed data presented to me in a table (table 2) on fish population in relation to the amount of dissolved oxygen ( ppm ) in the water. The patterns indicate that when more dissolved oxygen (ppm) is present in the water, the number of fish observed increases. In developing a hypothesis for this theory, I have decided that if the amount of dissolved oxygen (ppm) is added to the water, then more fish we be observed, than water without adding dissolved oxygen to the water.My approach would be to devise an experiment in which the amount of dissolved oxygen (ppm) can be changed in a controlled manner, then measure and record the changes. My independent variable would be the amount of dissolved oxygen (ppm) in the water, while the dependent variable would be the amount of fish present. The control I would use in this spe cific experiment would be the temperature of the water. I would graph this data using a bar graph because the results I am comparing are not representative in a continuous series, and doesnââ¬â¢t include dates, or days that samples are taken.The results are independent from each other. When presenting the data from table 2: Water Quality vs. fish Population, I would use a bar graph using the number of fish observed on the horizontal, and the amount of dissolved water (ppm) vertical. Such as in the graph presented in figure 4: Top speed for cars. The data presented in my graph would show that when higher amounts of dissolved oxygen (ppm) are present, the higher the quantities of fish are observed. In exercise 2 , I have determined that number 1,5 and 10 are testable, while 2,3,4,6,7, and 9 are not testable. . When a plant is placed on a window sill, it grows faster than when it is placed on a coffee table in the middle of the living room. Hypothesis: If the plant is placed on the window sill and getting more sunlight, then I will grow faster than the plant placed on the coffee table in the middle of the living room where it receives less sunlight. Null Hypothesis: If I place the plant on the window sill, it will grow at the same rate as the plant on the coffee table. My approach would be to create an experiment where the amount of sunlight can be changed in a ontrolled manner, then measure and record the results. The independent variable would be the amount of sunlight the plants are exposed to, while the dependent variable would be the amount of growth of the plants. My controls could be the amount of water given to each plant, the humidity, or the time of day, to name a few. I would collect my data by recording the amount of time each plant is exposed to sunlight, and measuring the amount of growth each day. The data would then be presented using a line graph, representing growth in height, by day, Day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4. separate lines will represe nt each plant. One line with sun light and another line without sunlight. My data will then be taken and analyzed from the tests, documentation and recordings done daily. Then I would use the data to support or nullify the hypothesis. 5. When Sally eats healthy foods and exercises regularly, her blood pressure is lower than when she does not exercise and eats fatty foods. Hypothesis: If Sally eats healthy foods and exercises, then her blood pressure will be lower than if she does not exercise and eats fatty foods.Null hypothesis: If Sally eats healthy foods and exercises her blood pressure will be the same as if she does not exercise and eats fatty foods. My approach would be to record blood pressures for one week while not exercising and eating fatty foods. Then I would record blood pressures the following week while exercising and eating healthy food. The dependent variable will be blood pressure while the independent variable will be exercise, what kind of food eaten such as heal thy versus fatty.The control variable would be the intensity of exercise and the time of day eating the foods. I would collect my data by keeping a log of daily blood pressures. Also I would log the amount of exercise and what food is being eaten. In presenting the data I would use a graph showing the blood pressure trends. Analyzing the data with given results of the tests, and other support or nullify the hypothesis. 10. Ice cream melts faster on a warm summer day than on a cold winter day. Hypothesis: If it is a warm summer day then ice cream will melt faster than it would on a cold winter day.Null hypothesis: If ice cream melts on a warm summer day, then it will melt just as fast on a cold winter day. My approach would be to record the amount of time it takes for ice cream to melt on both warm summer days and on cold winter days. The dependent variable would be the amount of time it takes for ice cream to melt, while the independent variable would be the type of day, warm summer day, or cold winter day. The control would be the amount of ice cream and the type of ice cream.I would collect my data by recording the type of day and the amount of time it takes for the ice cream to melt. I would then present it by using a bar graph to compare. Analyzing the data is achieved by using all the data collected and either support or nullify the hypothesis. An example of using the scientific method to an everyday problem would be saving money on a utility bill. Unplugging all unused appliances and turning off lights when not in use to cut back on the bill. I could test this by using the scientific method and performing experiments to support or nullify my hypothesis.
